How Therapy Works
My approach
Whether you’re coming in for insomnia or for support with emotional well-being and day-to-day coping, the structure is similar: a thorough assessment, a clear plan, and between-session practice so therapy translates into real-life change. When sleep is a primary focus, we add a brief sleep diary and sleep-specific tools.
Before your first appointment
You’ll complete a few brief questionnaires and share some background about what’s bringing you in—what’s been hard, what you’ve tried, and what you’re hoping will change.
If sleep is a main focus, I’ll ask you to keep a brief sleep diary for about a week, noting when you go to bed, how long it takes to fall asleep, awakenings, wake time, and anything that feels relevant (like worry, frustration, or habits that may be affecting sleep).
Initial assessment
At your first appointment, we’ll build a clear understanding of the problem and the context around it including your patterns, stressors, supports, and what tends to help versus what keeps things stuck.
We’ll typically cover:
Your history and context: routines, personality style, stress patterns, and relevant health factors
How the problem started: whether there was a specific trigger or a gradual build
What maintains it now: habits, coping strategies, and patterns of thinking that may be unintentionally reinforcing the problem
Tools you’ve tried: what helped, what didn’t, and what your preferences are going forward
Medical considerations: anything that suggests a medical or sleep evaluation would be useful
A personalized plan
Based on the assessment, I’ll formulate a plan that’s tailored to you, including what we’ll focus on, which skills we’ll use, and what between-session practice will look like. Using ACT, CBT, and mindfulness techniques, I’ll help you build new patterns and respond differently to difficult thoughts and feelings.
If sleep is a main focus, we’ll use CBT-I and ACT-I strategies to improve sleep quality and reduce the struggle with wakefulness and sleep-related worry.
We’ll track progress and adjust the plan as we go. Many people notice meaningful improvement within about eight sessions, though this varies based on your history and the severity of the problem.
Insurance and scheduling
Sessions are 50 minutes, and my fee is $250. I am an out-of-network provider, which means I do not work with insurance companies. I can provide a detailed invoice (superbill) so you can submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
Cancellation policy
If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, please provide at least 24 hours' notice on business days. Sessions cancelled with less notice are subject to the full session fee.
Telehealth sessions in NJ and NY
All sessions are conducted via secure telehealth for adults residing in New Jersey and New York. Because telehealth is licensed by location, you’ll need to be physically located in New Jersey or New York at the time of each session.
